THE HON RICHARD MARLES MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR IMMIGRATION AND BORDER PROTECTION MEMBER FOR CORIO

PATHWAY TO CITIZENSHIP WELCOME

Labor welcomes today’s announcement by the Turnbull Government to provide a clear path to Australian citizenship for New Zealanders who have lived and worked in Australia for at least 5 years.

Last year, Labor committed to giving consideration to the permanent residency status and potential citizenship arrangements for New Zealand citizens living in Australia under the terms of the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangements.

There are currently more than 660,000 New Zealand citizens living in Australia, many of whom have lived here for a large proportion of their working lives.

New Zealanders can currently live, work and study in Australia under the Special Category visa (subclass 444),allowing NZ citizens to stay in Australia indefinitely. While this visa category has promoted and supported close ties between our two countries, it does have the effect of leaving NZ citizens “permanently temporary”, preventing them from accessing some social services and health benefits that come with permanent residen

cy or citizenship.
