TURNBULL GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO COME CLEAN ON CANCELLATION OF LONE PINE COMMEMORATION SERVICE

The former Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Stuart Robert previously confirmed the decision of the Turnbull Government to abandon the Lone Pine Commemorative Service was not about terrorism or security reasons.

“This is not about terrorism this is about public safety and a logistical nightmare.”

If it is not a matter of security threats, then the Government needs to explain to the Australian people why they are cancelling the ANZAC Day Lone Pine Commemorative Service.

The Battle of Lone Pine and its commemoration continue to form a central part of our national commitment to remember the ANZACS and ensure their glory is never forgotten.

We must never stop honouring the fallen and their sacrifice.

Given that security is clearly not the issue, the Government needs to explain why it is cancelling this service.

Bill Shorten has written to Malcolm Turnbull strong urging him to reverse the decision to scrap the annual Lone Pine service immediately.

If Australians are willing to make the trip to Gallipoli to commemorate the service of their family and fellow Australians they should have the opportunity to do so at Lone Pine as well.

The Turnbull Government needs to be clear that the cancellation of the Lone Pine Commemorative Service is not just a callous savings measure.

The Government must come clean about why it has decided to abandon this important service.
