Safer Streets Grants for North Coast

Federal Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker is encouraging community, government and not-for-profit groups to apply for Safer Streets grants to help fund crime prevention initiatives such as CCTV and improved lighting on the North Coast.

Mr Hartsuyker said up to $29 million in individual grants under Round 2 of the Federal Government’s Safer Streets Programme are now available to fund security infrastructure at local crime hotspots on the North and Mid North Coast.

“This is about protecting local communities with practical crime prevention infrastructure and also giving people that peace of mind and sense of safety when they are in public areas across the Cowper electorate,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

Grants are available for initiatives such as:

• Lighting and CCTV installation;

• Removal of environmental factors that could facilitate street crime or anti-social behaviour in entertainment and commercial precincts or public parks;

• Police and Citizen Youth Clubs and Bluelight organisation engagement programmes for young people at risk of criminal or anti-social activity.

“I know from community feedback, that crime and safety are hot issues for many residents, so I am invested in working to identify where there is a need for increased security measures to help prevent crime,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

“Our Government firmly believes that all Australians have the right to feel safe and secure, and the Safer Streets Programme is one way we can achieve that.

“The Safer Streets Programme is partially funded through proceeds of crime - confiscated from criminals. This means that the crimes of yesterday can actually help prevent the crimes of tomorrow,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

More than $19million in funding has already been awarded under Round 1 of the Programme for projects across 150 locations to deliver security enhancements such as better lighting and CCTV in retail, entertainment and commercial precincts.
