THE HON ALANNAH MACTIERNAN MP SHADOW PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY FOR WESTERN AUSTRALIA SHADOW PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY FOR REGIONAL

DEVELOPMENT AND INFRASTRUCTURE MEMBER FOR PERTH

STATEMENT FROM ALANNAH MACTIERNAN

I have made the decision not to recontest the seat of Perth at the next election.

No one can regret having the opportunity of representing their community in the Federal Parliament. I thank the people of Perth for their faith in me.

I have very much been engaged by Federal issues and I have worked hard to represent the people of Perth and of WA in the nation’s capital.

Andrew Robb observed rightly that it takes a long time coming from the outside to establish yourself in Canberra.

If I was at the beginning of my political career I could afford to be more patient in this regard.

I believe it is more sensible for me to pass on the baton to someone who can build a bigger role over the next decade.

I know there are quality candidates waiting in the wings - and I know we can and will win the confidence of the people of Perth at the next election.

I have enjoyed getting to know the talented, compassionate members that make up the Labor team in Canberra: there is a bright future for us.

I will inevitably be asked whether I will return to State politics - and I have learnt to never say never.

Either way, I will be campaigning for Mark McGowan all the way, supporting him to be the next Premier of WA.
