TRIBUTE TO FORMER IMMIGRATION MINISTER

Sir Hubert Opperman, whose funeral was held today in Melbourne, was an outstanding Australian who served his country with distinction.

Sir Hubert served as Minister for Immigration between December 1963 and December 1966.

The Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, Philip Ruddock said two significant initiatives taken during Sir Hubert's time as Minister for Immigration were important steps in the establishment o f a non-discriminatory immigration program.

Under Sir Hubert's guidance, there was a relaxation o f conditions for the entry o f people o f mixed descent and a widening of eligibility criteria for entry by well-qualified people.

Sir Hubert will be remembered as a respected parliamentarian, diplomat and sportsman whose achievements were shared and celebrated by the nation. His passing will be a loss to all Australians.

Sir Hubert will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathy is extended to his family.
