North Coast Councils Receive Federal Funds

Another $3.66 million in untied Federal Government grants have been paid to the New South Wales Government and should flow through to North Coast councils this week, Federal Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker announced today.

The Australian Government will provide councils in Cowper with a total of $29,510,019 in Financial Assistance Grants during this financial year, including advance payments of $14,843,322 delivered in late June. The first quarterly payment for 2015-16 was made in August and the second quarterly payment of $3,666,674 was paid this week,” Mr Hartsuyker.

“In addition to the Financial Assistance Grants programme, the Australian Government supports local councils through Roads to Recovery, the road Black Spot programme, and the Bridges Renewal Programme.

“We are acutely aware, given recent reports that many councils are struggling to cover the costs of providing critical services and infrastructure in regional areas such as ours. These Financial Assistance Grants are designed to assist with shouldering some of this financial burden for the Coffs Harbour, Nambucca, Kempsey, Bellingen and Clarence Valley councils.

“These Financial Assistance grants are untied, which means they can be used by councils for local priorities, whether they are infrastructure, health, recreation, environment, employment or road projects.

“This is about empowering local communities to address local priorities, because they are at the coalface and know exactly what projects require funding,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

The $3.2 billion Roads to Recovery programme helps councils with the upgrading and maintenance of roads and the $500 million road Black Spot Programme is providing funding for notorious danger spots in our road networks.

The Federal Government is also providing extra assistance to local councils through the $300 million Bridges Renewal Programme, which is available to local government for the repair and replacement of local bridges.

Councils in the Cowper electorate will receive the following Financial Assistance Grants funding:
