LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS RECEIVE ALMOST $12 MILLION

Federal Member for Hunter, Joel Fitzgibbon today announced that 8 local primary schools in Hunter will receive almost $12 million for major new infrastructure projects under Round One of the Primary Schools for the 21st Century (P21) program.

Mr Fitzgibbon said P21 is delivering the second phase of the Rudd Government’s $14.7 billion Building the Education Revolution.

“It is wonderful to see our local schools and our local community benefit from the Government’s huge investment in new school buildings,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.

The $12.4 billion P21 program will deliver much needed funding to every primary school for major infrastructure projects, including libraries, multipurpose halls and classrooms.

Construction and refurbishment work will commence as soon as possible. Many of the P21 projects planned to begin this month will provide immediate support for local jobs and communities.

Mr Fitzgibbon encouraged all local primary schools to submit applications for Round Two which closes on 15 May 2009 and Round Three which closes on 10 July 2009.

This first Round is for 20% of projects, further successful school projects will be announced in the coming months.

“Today’s announcement is another big step in delivering the Building the Education Revolution, a key element of the Government’s $42 billion Nation Building - Economic Stimulus Plan,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.

“By investing in our local schools, the Rudd Government is helping to keep local contractors, tradies, truck drivers and small businesses working during these difficult days.”

A list of successful schools and their planned projects is attached.
