National Landcare grants open in the Wimmera

Landcare and community groups in the Wimmera Catchment Management Authority (CMA) area are now able to apply for Wimmera Regional Grants totalling $100,000 to help care for the region's natural environment and support sustainable agriculture.

Wimmera Regional Grants of up to $12,000 are available to undertake on ground works such as pest plant and animal control, fencing and revegetation as well as improving the community’s awareness of threatened species. The grants are part of the Government's National Landcare Programme and managed locally by Wimmera CMA — one of Australia's 56 regional natural resource management organisations.

“This is a great opportunity for local communities to tackle important on-ground works aimed at addressing local natural resource management priorities,” Minister for the Environment Greg Hunt said.

“Through these regional grants communities are invited to deliver simple, local and long-term solutions to improve the productivity of their land and their local environment.

“It’s also pleasing to see that Australia’s 56 regional natural resource management organisations are directing more than 20 per cent of their National Landcare Programme Funding to help support grant rounds such as these as well as other local community engagement activities.”

“The Australian Government is ensuring that funding is invested locally to deliver real change that is targeted on and off farm to safeguard productive capacity in the land for the future and to safeguard our environment,” Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce said.

The Federal Member for Mallee, Andrew Broad MP, has also welcomed the new grant round, praising the work of the Wimmera CMA.

“The Wimmera CMA does a wonderful job, working with our rural communities on important environmental projects that are delivering great outcomes.

“Regional Australians have the skills, experience and passion to make this country better from a grass roots level and it’s great to see the Australian Government partnering with them to address the environmental and agricultural issues facing the Wimmera region and getting things done,” Mr. Broad said.

The Australian Government is investing $2 billion to help support better natural resource management across Australia. As part of this commitment $1 billion will be invested through the National Landcare Programme, including more than $450 million directed in regional funding through to Australia’s 56 natural resource management organisations.
