THE HON MARK BUTLER MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, CLIMATE CHANGE AND WATER MEMBER FOR PORT ADELAIDE

TWO YEARS OF ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL FAILURE

In just two years, Tony Abbott has failed the environment and failed future generations by turning his back on the jobs and investment opportunities from transitioning to renewable energy.

On the eve of the last election Tony Abbott promised: “There will be no surprises, there will be no excuses.” TONY ABBOTT, 3AW NEIL MITCHELL, 6 SEPTEMBER 2015

He also promised: “We have no plans to change the renewable energy target.” TONY ABBOTT - 27 SEPTEMBER 2011

Instead, Tony Abbott has launched an unscientific, fictitious and prejudiced campaign to kill the renewable energy industry.

The Liberals undermined Australia’s Renewable Energy Target, tried to abolish the Clean Energy Finance Corporation and ARENA, and have launched mindless attacks about the ‘aesthetics’ of wind farms.

While Labor has helped to restore confidence in renewables, because of Tony Abbott’s attacks investment in large scale renewables has fallen by 88 per cent and 2,500 jobs have been lost.

Australia has moved from 4th to 10th in the Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index and 4th to 37th in the Global Green Economy Index after two years of Tony.

At precisely the time when investment in renewables is growing, costs are falling and Australian research is driving innovation, Tony Abbott has pulled up the drawbridge.

Without investing in renewable energy, without an emissions trading scheme, without modernising our overall energy sector - it doesn’t matter what emissions reduction target the government picks - we won’t get there.

That’s because under Tony Abbott’s Direct Action policy - emissions are going up and the cost to the Australian public is going up too.

Australia's largest energy and emissions market analyst, Reputex, has confirmed under Tony Abbott’s policy carbon pollution levels from Australia's biggest polluters will increase by 20 per cent by 2030.

Emissions from Australia's main sources of energy use have jumped by almost 10 million tonnes under the Abbott Government.

Malcolm Turnbull has said Direct Action is ‘a recipe for fiscal recklessness on a grand scale’ - and Tony Abbott’s plan will waste up to $4.3 billion giving great wads of taxpayer cash to big polluters to keep polluting.

Over the past two years, Tony Abbott has also failed to protect Australia’s environment

The self-described “conservationist” cut Landcare funding in the Budget by $438 million.

He dismantled Australia’s marine reserve network, scrapped the Climate Commission and misused federal environment laws to allow the controversial WA shark cull to go ahead.

He sought to remove sections of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area from the World Heritage List, a move unanimously rejected by the World Heritage Committee.

He is handing over environment protection powers for matters of national environmental significance to state and local governments. All the while attempting to remove the legal pathways for the community to have a role in protecting environmental.

Tony Abbott has been described in international media as the most hostile Prime Minister towards the environment in Australia’s history.

There’s no evidence to the contrary in his management of Australia’s greatest asset and our bequest to the next generation.

After two years of Tony, Australia’s environment, our economy and future generations are paying the price.
