Robert Simms Announced as Next Greens Senator for South Australia

Adelaide City Councillor Robert Simms has been elected by a ballot of SA Greens members to fill the casual vacancy created following the resignation of Senator Penny Wright.

Australian Greens Leader Dr Richard Di Natale welcomed Robert Simms to the federal party room: “I congratulate Robert on his preselection and look forward to him joining our team in Canberra,” he said.

“Robert will be an exceptional asset for our party and the nation, bringing a proven track record in representing communities and a strong and positive vision for the future.”

Mr Simms paid tribute to outgoing Senator Penny Wright: “Penny Wright has left some very big shoes to fill in the Senate and I’ll be working hard to continue her strong advocacy for South Australia,” he said.

“This is a tremendous honour and I want to thank the members of the SA Greens for placing their trust in me. Like many Australians, I have been horrified by the Abbott Government’s attacks on the environment and the most vulnerable people in our community. The Greens’ positive vision for the future is desperately needed and I look forward to playing my part in fighting for people and the planet in the national Parliament.

“As a result of my selection as Senator, in coming days I will resign from my position as an Adelaide City Councillor. It has been a privilege to represent the community on Council. I will continue to promote the interests of our wonderful city, as well as South Australia more broadly, at a national level.”

Outgoing Senator Penny Wright said: “Robert will be a fine advocate for our State and for Greens’ values. I’m pleased to welcome such a principled, intelligent and committed person as Rob to continue my work for South Australia.”

Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said: “I’m thrilled to see someone as competent and courageous as Rob Simms entering the Parliament. I look forward to working closely with him and ensuring that South Australians receive the best possible representation in Canberra.”
