THE HON MARK BUTLER MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR ENVIRONMENT, CLIMATE CHANGE AND WATER MEMBER FOR PORT ADELAIDE

CRUEL HOAX ON FUTURE GENERATIONS

The release today of Tony Abbott's "safeguard mechanism" confirms that Mr Abbott has no plan to start reducing Australia's carbon pollution levels and addressing the challenge of climate change.

Australia's largest energy and emissions market analyst, Reputex, has confirmed that these so-called rules will see carbon pollution levels from Australia's biggest polluters increase by 20 per cent by 2030.

This smashes any pretence that the emissions reduction targets Tony Abbott announced a fortnight ago are anything other than a cruel hoax on future generations.

Tony Abbott's policy contains no national limit on Australia's carbon pollution levels that can be reduced over time in line with our international commitments. There is no obligation at all on Australia's biggest polluters to reduce their pollution; indeed, Mr Abbott provides them with a range of options to increase their pollution.   Five years ago, Malcolm Turnbull described Tony Abbott's climate change policy as an "environmental fig leaf designed to disguise a determination to do nothing". Today's announcement by Mr Abbott confirms Mr Turnbull's predictions.

At a time when the rest of the world is developing serious plans to combat climate change and embrace the opportunities of cleaner energy, Tony Abbott's position is grossly irresponsible.   Tony Abbott’s climate change policies will cost the taxpayer billions of dollars without reducing pollution or delivering the job and investment opportunities from transitioning to renewable energy.   As President Obama said in Alaska yesterday, "any so-called leader who does not take this issue seriously or treats it like a joke is not fit to lead".
