LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION THE HON. MALCOLM TURNBULL MP FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WENTWORTH

STATEMENT REGARDING SUNDAY TELEGRAPH ARTICLE

The article in today's Sunday Telegraph (9/11/08) by Sharri Markson relating to the Prime Minister's wife Therese Rein completely misrepresents comments made by me and is incorrect.

Ms Markson appears to have lifted material from a Courier Mail article published yesterday (8/11/08), based on an interview I did on Friday with a reporter from that newspaper, Clinton Porteous, and Mark Kenny from the Adelaide Advertiser.

Please find attached below a transcript of my only comments in that interview about Ms Rein in response to questions from Mr Porteous.

The transcript clearly shows Mr Porteous's original article misrepresented my comments, an error Ms Markson's article has repeated and amplified.

It is nothing more than invention to suggest I criticised Ms Rein in any way.

EXCERPT OF TRANSCRIPT OF INTERVIEW WITH CLINTON PORTEOUS AND MARK KENNY, SYDNEY, FRIDAY 7 NOVEMBER 2008

CLINTON PORTEOUS:

Can I just ask one last…have you had social situations with Lucy and Therese Rein?

MALCOLM TURNBULL:

No.

CLINTON PORTEOUS:

That hasn’t come about?

MALCOLM TURNBULL:

No, not that I, no. I mean I’ve been at…I haven’t…yeah, no.

CLINTON PORTEOUS:

So has Therese been in the room?

MALCOLM TURNBULL:

I’ve been in the same room as her but I don’t think I’ve ever had a conversation with her. And…but not often. You know just…I’m not…it’s…you ask about what is your relationship, basically the answer is there is no relationship. But I’m very open to one, I mean I am a convivial fellow - always happy to make new friends.
