Michelle O’Byrne MP FEDERAL MEMBER FOR BASS SHADOW PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY FOR COMMUNICATIONS

PRESS RELEASE

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MP FAILS TO SAVE LOCAL POST OFFICE

The failure of the local Federal MP to save the Strathpine Post Office in Brisbane’s north was a disappointing end to a fearless campaign run by local residents, according to Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Communications, Michelle O’Byrne.

Ms O’Byrne said that Dickson Liberal MP, Peter Dutton, had “talked the talk” but in the end he had proved powerless to save the local community’s service.

“Post offices providing all the basic services are an entitlement which should be available, within reason, to all Australians, especially those communities with significant numbers of older Australians living independently,” Ms O’Byrne said.

She said Mr Dutton had once appeared to have acknowledged this but, in the end, he had accepted Australia Post’s decision to replace the post office with a community postal agency with limited retail services.

“His statement that, after a long fight, it was a good result for those who had private post office boxes was extraordinary. How is that supposed to help the elderly and disabled in the area who have become accustomed to paying their bills or doing their banking locally?”

Ms O’Byrne said this was yet another example of corporate efficiency over-riding the provision of basic everyday services to Australian citizens.

“Australia Post is a fine Australian institution, which enables for the most part Australians to receive the postal and related services they are entitled to. However this time it appears they have slipped up,” Ms O’Byrne said.
