M e d i a R e l e a s e THE HON. WARREN SNOWDON MP Federal Member for Lingiari 15th October 2008 OPENING UP THE OUTBACK WAY Member for Lingiari, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP today welcomed news that the Rudd Labor Government has approved a priority upgrade of Tjukaruru Road (Gunbarrel Highway). “The upgrade will give the communities along the route such as the Kaltukatjara (Docker River Community) improved access to Uluru and Alice Springs,” said Mr Snowdon. “It is also important for developing the tourist route the ‘Outback Way’ and more traffic may open up other business opportunities for the local communities.” The Tjukaruru Road upgrade will involve lifting, strengthening and widening, and gravelling approximately 12 kilometres of the road and improving drainage. The works will involve minor clearing as part of the widening. Seed bearing crop-lines will be spread on the edging as part of the rehabilitation component of the works. “The poor quality of this stretch of road has led to closures and weight restrictions,” said Mr Snowdon. “Once this work is complete mid-next year it should not only help ensure the safety of communities using Tjukaruru Road, but also more readily support the growing outback adventure tourism in the region.” The Outback Way runs diagonally across the continent, linking Laverton in Western Australia with Winton in South-West Queensland, via Alice Springs, and Ulura/Kata Tjuta National Park in the Northern Territory. The Government has committed $10 million to upgrade priority sections of the route. Work on eight sections is already completed, with work on a further two nearing completion. “This is the final section of the 2,800 kilometre ‘Outback Way’ to receive an upgrade, and reaffirms the Government’s commitment to both investing in the nation’s infrastructure and in remote economies.” Media Contact: Kate Sieper 0488 484 689
