UWS receives $1.6m for teaching and learning

Federal Member for Chifley, Roger Price has welcomed the Rudd Government’s allocation of $1.64 million to the University of Western Sydney as part of an improvement component in the Australian Government’s 2009 Learning and Teaching Performance Fund.

“It is fantastic that our local university will be receiving funding under this program for the very first time” Mr. Price said.

Under the previous Liberal Government, funding for UWS was overlooked under this Fund. As a result only a few, mainly prestigious universities received funding and little, if anything, went to regional and less well resourced universities.

In 2009 the fund will reward more universities than ever before. This follows the Rudd Government’s decision to introduce an improvement component, which recognises universities for improving their teaching and learning performance over time.

UWS will receive $1,646,574.52 in improvement funding. This is in addition to $5.7m in funding for Nirimba Campus as part of the Rudd Government’s Diversity and Structural Adjustment Fund and the $47.5 million School of Medicine Building at the University of Western Sydney’s Campbelltown Campus.

“Higher education reform is a key element of the Rudd Government’s Education Revolution”.

“The improvement component in this Fund recognises the added effort universities are placing on improving their teaching quality which directly benefits students by improving the quality of the education they receive” Mr. Price concluded.
