NOMINATE A HERO FOR 2008 HUMAN RIGHTS MEDAL

Federal Member for Wannon, David Hawker, is urging Western Victorians to nominate a human rights hero for the 2008 Human Rights Medals and Awards.

“These Awards recognise the achievements of individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights in Australia,” Mr Hawker said.

“The Human Rights Medal has been awarded since 1987, and this year a new award is being introduced, the Young People’s Human Rights Medal.

“Human Rights Awards are also presented to an individual or organisation that has made significant contributions in the area of Media (print, television and radio), Literature (non-fiction), Community (individual and organisation) and the Law,” he said.

Nomination forms and details of previous years’ winners can be found at www.humanrights.gov.au/hr_awards/index.html or by contacting Mr Hawker’s office on 1300 131 692.

Entries close at 5pm on Friday 3 October 2008.

Mr Hawker said the Awards Ceremony will be held on 10 December in Sydney.
