Minister for Defence Media Mail List ------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT: The Minister for Defence, the Hon Joel Fitzgibbon MP will visit RAAF Base Edinburgh on Friday 20 June.

Minister Fitzgibbon and Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Geoff Shepherd AO, will attend a ceremony formally recognising 10 Squadron’s outstanding service in the Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO).

From April 2003 to April 2008, up to 70 members of Adelaide’s 10 SQN personnel were deployed at any one time to the Middle East to operate the AP-3C Orion aircraft. RAAF Orions conduct maritime patrols of the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea and undertake overland reconnaissance of Iraq, supporting both Australian and Coalition forces. The five years of continuous service represents the longest period of active duty for 10 Squadron since World War II.

Minister Fitzgibbon will also turn the first sod in a $30 million infrastructure project at RAAF Edinburgh. The project will deliver a new air movements terminal, heavy cargo preparation facility and upgraded airfield pavement to accommodate Air Force’s C-17 aircraft at Edinburgh.

WHERE: RAAF Base Edinburgh

WHEN: Friday 20 June. Media should assemble at main gate at 9:15 am. Photographic identification is required to access the Base.

Defence will provide new footage of an Orion mission in the Middle East. This will be available on disc to media attending the ceremony. The vision will also be fed to Parliament House TV bureaus on the morning of 20 June.
