Media Release Andrew Broad Member for Mallee

Wednesday, 27 May 2015

The Member for Mallee, Andrew Broad, has once again appealed to the Minister for Health,

The Hon Sussan Ley MP, to reinstate funding for the Healthy Together Mildura program.

“Since I first became aware of the intention to cut funding for this important program in 2014, I

have been arguing for its reinstatement.

“Healthy communities are strong communities and sadly, statistics show that Mildura is falling

behind in a number of crucial areas.

“With obesity now the leading cause of death in Australia, it’s alarming that 57% of Mildura’s

population is overweight. The implications of this will be far reaching and we need to be

addressing the problem now.

“The Healthy Together program was delivering results and I cannot see the sense or

justification in abolishing a program that was working,” Mr. Broad said.

Healthy Together was a state-wide project that encouraged healthy eating and lifestyle

choices, which was funded under the National Partnership Agreement on Preventative

It was announced in 2014 that funding for the project would cease, causing widespread

dismay, in light of Australia’s increasing health concerns.

The Municipal Association of Victoria passed a resolution earlier this month to request the

Federal Government reinstate funding so that the program can continue after July 2015, a

move Mr. Broad supports.

“Back in 2014 I wrote to the then Minister for Health, Peter Dutton, to express my concerns

about the funding cut and requested that he reconsider it, without success.

“Ms. Ley was in our region last week and is reported as saying that politics has affected

discussions regarding preventative health.

“I say we need to set aside politics and look at what is best for a community.

“Cuts to preventative health may save money in the short term but it’s guaranteed to cost us

ten-fold in future.”
