THE HON GARY GRAY AO MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR RESOURCES AND ENERGY MEMBER FOR BRAND

NSW GOVERNMENT FATTENS THE CHOOK AND COOKS THE GOOSE

Shadow Minister for Resources and Energy the Hon Gary Gray AO MP today called on the New South Wales Government to abandon its plan to challenge the Australian Energy Regulator’s decision to lower energy prices for consumers.

“The evidence suggests that the distribution businesses in NSW and the ACT are not operating as efficiently as other networks. Every family and business is paying higher energy prices,” said Mr Gray.

“The AER has made its final decisions to lower the revenues that NSW and ACT electricity network businesses should properly recover from customers.

“The decisions reflect a rigorous and independent assessment of how much revenue the network businesses need to reliably, safely and efficiently supply energy to customers.

“The NSW Government’s decision to fight the AER’s assessment conflicts with its claims to be concerned with lowering electricity prices.

“It looks like they are trying to fatten the electricity network chook before taking it to the privatisation market.

“The AER’s job is not to maximise the NSW Government’s revenue or the price it gets through privatisation at the expense of NSW and ACT consumers.

“Transmission costs can make up 50 per cent of a household’s energy bill. The AER’s decisions will mean lower electricity prices. The actions of the NSW government mean higher prices.”
