Have your say on National Diabetes Strategy

The Abbott Government is extending the consultation period for the National Diabetes Strategy to allow more public input into the nation’s largest conversation about diabetes.

Health Minister Sussan Ley said the extended timeframe would allow the public to review new reports including the evaluation of the Diabetes Care Project and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) report Incidence of type 1 diabetes in Australia 2000 - 2013.

Ms Ley said the consultation process was open until 31 May and feedback received would help guide the Abbott Government’s development of the National Diabetes Strategy.

“These new reports can help inform opinions and feedback into the consultation paper,” Ms Ley said.

“In 2013, there were 2,323 new cases of type 1 diabetes in Australia. The National Diabetes Strategy is an essential Government initiative designed to educate the community, promote early detection and reduce the prevalence of diabetes and diabetes related complications.

“We want to hear from those people living with diabetes, carers and family members and health professionals to provide essential feedback that will help form our national strategy.”

In just over a month, the consultation paper has received more than 300 submissions with the majority from individuals affected by diabetes.

Ms Ley said it was important to highlight the new reports that provide further insight into the state of diabetes health in Australia.

“This national strategy will aim to prioritise Australia’s response to diabetes; identify the best approaches to addressing the impact of diabetes in the community; and position Australia as an international leader in diabetes prevention, management and research,” Ms Ley said.

The Diabetes Care Project was a three year pilot programme which analysed new models of health care delivery for adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
