Time for Abbott to act on trains, trams and buses

The Greens say we are at a fork in the road on transport funding, with Infrastructure Australia's report on future congestion set to be released today.

"Congestion is a major problem, but it's not going to be fixed by the old model of more and more mega toll roads," said the Australian Greens spokesperson for transport and infrastructure Senator Janet Rice.

"Building more roads to fix congestion is like loosening your belt to cure obesity.

"The best way to reduce congestion is to give people the choice of public transport that gets them where they need to go."

Our Infrastructure Challenges is reported to predict demand for public transport will increase by 89 per cent by 2031.

"More Australians than ever are getting on board trains, trams and buses," said Senator Rice.

"A train every five minutes carries the same number of people as five freeway lanes.

"Tony Abbott needs to get over his addiction to toll roads and start funding the public transport projects that the community wants.

"This Coalition government could start by funding the shovel-ready Melbourne Metro rail tunnel."
