KATE ELLIS MP

SHADOW MINISTER FOR EDUCATION SHADOW MINISTER FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD MEMBER FOR ADELAIDE

MEDIA RELEASE

PM GETS IT WRONG ON CHILD CARE

Today in Question Time the Prime Minister demonstrated that he is either incompetent or dishonest when questioned about his $1 billion cuts to child care.

ABBOTT SAID: “Child care payments are not going down”

FACT: The Government currently has legislation before the Parliament which cuts $336 million from existing child care assistance.

The Department of Education has confirmed that this will reduce the child care assistance payments of over half a million Australian families.

Early Childhood Australia modelling shows these cuts will mean low income families will pay an extra $3,000 to $5,000 in child care next year.

ABBOTT SAID: “This Government has done no more than what the former Government was prepared to do with benefits in this area.”

[TONY ABBOTT, QUESTION TIME, 23 JUNE 2014]

FACT: Never before has a Government sought to cut the targeted and means-tested Child Care Benefit (CCB) program. The Prime Minister’s attacks on the CCB will reduce the payments of families on as little as $42,000 per year. No previous Government has moved to cut CCB because it is directed at precisely the families who are otherwise most at risk of being forced out of the workforce.

The Child Care Rebate has not been capped previously without the funds being reinvested in child care. This is unlike this Government’s move of stripping funding from child care due to their so called “budget emergency,” yet finding billions of dollars for its unfair Paid Parental Leave scheme to give $50,000 to wealthy families who have a baby.

ABBOTT SAID: “We want to see a better childcare system.”

[TONY ABBOTT, QUESTION TIME, 23 JUNE 2014]

FACT: In just nine months the Abbott Government has announced cuts of over $1 billion from the child care portfolio.

This includes:

• $450 million cut from Outside School Hours Care • $336 million cut from child care support • $157 million cut from Family Day Care

Either the Prime Minister has no idea what devastating actions his own Government are undertaking in child care, or he is just flat out lying.

This is a Government that lied before the election by telling the Australian people that there would be “no cuts to education” and is now slashing early childhood education. But making a bad situation worse, the Prime Minister is now lying about lying.
