Australian assistance for flood victims in Vietnam

Australia will provide almost $200,000 for emergency relief and rehabilitation for flood victims in Vietnam, the Minister for Trade and Overseas Development, ' John Kerin, announced today.

"Torrential rains have caused widespread damage in six Vietnamese provinces," Mr Kerin said.

"It is estimated that more than 44,000 people have been affected - crops have been devastated and homes washed away.

"The Australian response will be channelled through UNICEF Australia and CARE Australia."

The assistance will be provided as follows: • $100,000 to UNICEF Australia for essential drugs, vegetable seeds and poultry, repair and rehabilitation of wells and latrines, school supplies, etc in Quang Binh and Quang Tri provinces

• $87,000 to CARE Australia for emergency assistance in Quang Binh province.

Relief assistance for Vietnam is administered by AIDAB, Australia's overseas aid agency.
