AUSTRADE AND W.A. CREATE NEW TRADE CENTRE

A new International Trade Centre, created by combining resources from Austrade, the Government of Western Australia and the W.A. Chamber of Commerce and Industry was opened in Perth today (Friday 2 October) by the Minister for Trade and Overseas Development, Mr John Kerin.

The Trade Centre is designed to coordinate and, where possible, combine Government and private enterprise information and referral services providing an initial point of access top international trade facilitation services for WA. exporters.

The Centre is located at the offices of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Hay Street, East Perth.

Mr Kerin told guests at the formal opening of the Centre that : In the new competitive Australia, there is no place for overlapping services or service duplication." He added:

"Industry and Government must cooperate to provide cost effective services to the people leading our economic advancement -- our exporters."

Mr Kerin said the new Centre would help exporters to make sense of a "bewildering array" of service providers, each promoting their individual services.

He said an experienced officer from Austrade would work with a team from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry at the centre with similar participation from the W.A. Department of State Development.

Poz2tradc...i c o involved with State bodies in similar, joint "Export Centres" in Adelaide and Canberra and provides a special, contractual service ihrough its international offices to the Government of Queensland.

Mr Kerin said that, from the Australian Trade Commission's point of view, the thrust of the new Perth Centre was to provide a direct link into the Austrade international network.

"Austrade has extensively re-organised the placement of its overseas

resources to provide high levels of service in those markets which offer the greatest potential and where help is needed," Mr Kenn said.

He referred to a new regional Austrade office recently opened at Nagoya in Japan by the Prime Minister. This brought to four the number of Austrade's Japan offices with two more about to be opened in other regional centres --Sendai and Sapporo. The new offices were designed to give direct access to rich regional markets which offered lower entry costs and risks than 'major centres such as Tokyo or Osaka.

Mr Kerin said Asia -- which takes almost 60% of Australian exports — was a natural focus for both Austrade and the exporters of Western Australia.

"By supporting and linking to the Trade Centre, Austrade will ensure that its expanded resources in Asia -- and, indeed, other markets -- benefit Western Australian exporters," he said.
