STOP THE PRESS: PRIME MINISTER SUPPORTS PRIME MINISTER’S PROGRAM

Environment Minister Greg Hunt has given a resounding endorsement of the Abbott Government’s School Chaplaincy Program this morning, saying the program has strong support - from the Prime Minister.

Minister Hunt told ABC Radio National this morning:

ALISON CARABINE: Minister, last week’s High Court decision throwing federal funding for school chaplains in doubt. It was you who first came up with the proposal for a chaplaincy program back in 2006. Cabinet will take a look at the funding issue today. Will we see the program continue but with the funding directed through the states?

GREG HUNT: My understanding is that we have a very clear support for the school chaplaincy program.

CARABINE: From whom?

HUNT: From the Prime Minister’s public words and so I think you’ll find that the Prime Minister has re-emphasised -

CARABINE: So the Government supports its own program.

[RADIO NATIONAL - 23 JUNE 2014]

It’s pleasing to see a senior Government Minister acknowledge the Coalition’s decision to exclude secular councillors and welfare officers from the School Chaplaincy Program is only supported by the Prime Minister.

Labor did not support the Abbott Government’s move to fund only religious chaplains and not secular welfare officers or counsellors.

It is interesting to note that at a time when it’s cutting $80 billion from hospitals and schools, and cutting funding for disability support in schools, the Abbott Government was able to find almost a quarter of a billion dollars for religious only chaplains.
