The Independent Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, today seconded Adam Bandt’s Private Members Bill that would require parliamentary approval for the combat deployment overseas of Australian Defence Force personnel.

Andrew Wilkie and Adam Bandt tried to progress a similar Bill during the previous parliament, but members of the then Labor Government and the Coalition refused to support it.

“This country has already seen the dreadful effects of a Prime Minister make the decision to go to war without the approval of the Parliament,” Mr Wilkie said.

“In fact the people of Iraq are enduring the consequences right now of the reckless and unnecessary war started 11 years ago by, in part, Prime Minister John Howard personally.

“Never again should Australian soldiers lose their lives because of a lie.

“The decision to deploy troops overseas should not be taken lightly. It affects all of us, not just the Defence Force, and should be made by the whole parliament not just the Prime Minister.”
