Sydney - final countdown to digital-only TV has begun!

13 November 2013

The Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP Minister for Communications

Sydney and surrounding areas will switch to digital-only TV at 9am on 3 December 2013.

"To watch free-to-air television after this date, you need to be digital ready," Minister for Communications, Malcolm Turnbull said today.

"The Sydney switchover area includes Gosford, Katoomba and Picton, with over 1.7 million households making the switch.

"Already, over 94 per cent of households have converted to digital TV since it became available across Sydney in 2001.

"If you haven’t yet switched from analog to digital TV, please don’t put it off any longer."

Mr Turnbull said converting to digital TV involves adding a set-top box or digital recorder to each analog TV or replacing your analog television with a new TV that has a built-in digital tuner.

The Household Assistance Scheme is still available to help eligible pensioners who have not yet converted to digital TV. Over 44,000 households across Sydney have been assisted through the Scheme. To check eligibility for this assistance, contact the Department of Human Services on 1800 556 443.

Information about the digital switchover and assistance is available on the Digital Ready website at or by calling the Digital Ready Information Line on 1800 20 10 13.

"In December this year, all analog free-to-air television signals will cease and Australian television will be digital-only," Mr Turnbull said.

"It will be the culmination of work commenced in 2001 which has involved industry, government and the community working in partnership to deliver a better quality television service for Australians."
