Sydney switches to digital-only TV

3 December 2013

The Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP Minister for Communications

Analog television signals across Sydney were switched off today, introducing a new era of digital-only television for up to 1.7 million households.

The Sydney switchover area, which includes Gosford, Katoomba and Picton, is one of the final three areas of Australia to move to digital-only television.

A 9am ceremony* at the historic Gore Hill transmitter, site of Australia's first ABC transmission in 1956, saw the analog television signal switched off permanently.

From today, viewers in Sydney have access to 17 free-to-air channels with better quality pictures and CD quality sound.

If you have not yet converted to digital-only television, it's not too late. You can attach a digital set-top box or digital recorder to your analog television or you can upgrade to a digital TV with built-in digital recorder.

More information and advice is available by calling the Digital Ready Information Line on 1800 20 10 13 or visiting the website

The Household Assistance Scheme will also remain open in the Sydney switchover region until 3 January 2014, providing practical help to eligible pensioners who have not yet converted to digital-only TV. To check eligibility for this assistance, call the Department of Human Services on 1800 556 443.

On 10 December, two remaining areas of Australia—Melbourne and Remote Central and Eastern Australia—will switch from analog to digital-only television. When the analog signal is switched off in those locations, Australian free-to-air television will be digital-only.
