TONY ABBOTT REFUSING TO PROVIDE ANSWERS TO INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES

Today the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, Alan Tudge has failed to address real and significant concerns for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, after the Abbott Government’s Budget of Betrayal ripped away over $500 million from Indigenous Affairs.

Mr Tudge was questioned about the cuts in the Federation Chamber as part of the Appropriations Bills Consideration in Detail, however, dodged questions, answering none.

It is five weeks since the Budget of Broken Promises was handed down, and Tony Abbott and his Parliamentary Secretary still refuse to provide any detail or information on where these cuts will fall.

He could not explain the discrepancy between the Minister for Indigenous Affairs - who claimed that the Budget’s $534.4 million cut was an ‘efficiency dividend’ and would not impact on any frontline services on the ground - and the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet - which admitted that the cuts would include direct program funding.

He could not explain the recent media comments from Warren Mundine, the head of the Prime Minister’s own Indigenous Advisory Council, seeking to cut a further $600 million from the Indigenous Affairs Budget.

In fact Mr Tudge could provide no evidence the Government had even considered the impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities and workers and ignored questions about the Budget impact on Indigenous health.

It is evident that Tony Abbott has no intention to deliver on his solemn promise to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people: to be the Prime Minister for Indigenous Affairs.
