FORMER GOVERNMENT’S DECISION TO PAY LEGAL COSTS

Today's media report suggesting that the Coalition Government has agreed to pay the former Member for Fisher, the Hon Peter Slipper's legal costs is incorrect.

This was a decision of the former Labor government that the current government is bound by and required to comply with.

The facts are:

• On 10 July 2013, the former Labor government approved an act of grace payment to the former Member for Fisher, the Hon Peter Slipper, for his net legal costs in the Federal Court proceedings brought by Mr Ashby against him.

• Following this decision of the former Labor government, the quantum of the final cost to the Commonwealth will not be known until the matter is resolved in the Federal Court.

• On 12 July 2013, the former government issued a statement explaining its decision (attached).
