MEDIA RELEASE

REGIONAL COMMUNITIES DESERVE TO KNOW THE IMPACT OF ABBOTT’S PETROL TAX

Families in regional and rural Australia deserve to know the full impact of Tony Abbott’s unfair $2.2 billion petrol tax.

Following yesterday’s revelation that the government hasn’t done any modelling on the impact the fuel excise would have on regional Australia, the Treasurer must give a guarantee that the modelling now being undertaken will be publically released.

It’s an absolute disgrace that Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey hadn’t even thought about the damage their new petrol tax would have in our regional and rural areas until yesterday.

It shows they didn’t think about families in the bush when they developed this unfair budget and it shows the Nationals failed to stand up for their communities.

Now that the government is finally modelling the impacts, all Australians deserve to know the truth about this unfair petrol tax.

Tony Abbott said at the last election he wouldn’t increase taxes. Now Australians will pay every time they fill up their vehicles.

And while he is making it harder for families in the bush to get by, he is introducing an unfair paid parental leave scheme.

People in rural and regional Australia can no longer rely on the Nationals to stand up for them. Joe Hockey needs to publically release this modelling because the Nationals can’t be trusted to give regional Australians the truth.

If the Nationals were doing their job properly, there wouldn’t be a new petrol tax and there wouldn’t be this unfair paid parental leave scheme.
