Senator Kate Lundy has condemned vandals who broke into the Canberra Islamic Centre last night and caused thousands of dollars worth of damage.

‘Last night’s attack on the Canberra Islamic Centre is detestable’ said Senator Kate Lundy.

‘My thoughts are with the Canberra Islamic Centre members who were directly impacted by the attack.

‘It was particularly disturbing to hear that the centre was so badly damaged its evening worshippers were forced to pray outside in the cold and the dark.

‘The Canberra Islamic Centre is a community organisation that provides vital services to Canberra Muslims and the Canberra community more broadly.

‘More than 400 people rely on the centre as a place of worship and education - they have been denied those services today by the abhorrent acts of a few individuals.

‘Today the Canberra Islamic Centre should be running classes and conducting prayers - instead its members will spend the day tallying up the damages.

‘More than ever, the Canberra Islamic Centre needs the support of the community. I would urge anyone who can to lend a hand and help get this vital community organisation back up and running.’
