MEDIA RELEASE THE HON JOEL FITZGIBBON MP MEMBER FOR HUNTER Shadow Minister for Agriculture ___________________________________________________________

18 June 2014

I’m a TAFE champion!

National TAFE Day - 18 June 2014

Federal Member for Hunter, Joel Fitzgibbon, today took the opportunity, on National TAFE Day, to re-affirm his commitment to working with Labor to support TAFE into the future.

Mr Fitzgibbon said that TAFE provides access to training for people in the Hunter electorate and helps the disadvantaged in our community gain access to training and the workforce. It also provides a second chance for many students who were unable to complete their schooling.

TAFE is the backbone of our tertiary education system and our local community in Hunter and has trained the plumbers, electricians, hairdressers, chefs, builders, mechanics and other tradespeople we rely on in everyday life.

TAFE is a trusted institution which delivers quality training and ensures inclusion and helps to build the skills that our workforce needs to increase participation and productivity.

Around the country we have seen an unfair attack on TAFE from State Liberal Governments. In New South Wales courses are being cut, fees are increasing and campuses are under threat.

TAFE provides a fair go and opportunity to anyone who wants to improve their education or embark on a new career.

We need to protect our local TAFE in Hunter and today is a great day to promote the important work that our local TAFE colleges do in training the workers of the future and providing a second chance opportunity for people to undertake further education.
