Australia deserves a Health Minister who takes health seriously

During Question Time today the Minister for Health Peter Dutton shouted at members of the Opposition ‘take your medication’.

This is offensive to those Australians who, through no fault of their own, rely on medication to live life as best they can.

The Minister was rightly forced to withdraw these insults. As the Minister responsible for the health of Australians he should know better.

The Minister’s record to date has been to hand down a cut of more than $50 billion to Australia’s public hospitals; increase the cost of medicines, including for pensioners and people with a disability at a cost of more than $1.3 billion; cut $390 million from public dental programs; cut almost $370 million from preventive health programs to tackle smoking and obesity; and plans to close every single Medicare Local.

Australians deserve a Health Minister who will stand up for the health of Australians, not insult Australians and allow the destruction of Medicare.
