Greens respond to Christmas Island tragedy Supreme Court action

In responding to the Supreme Court case launched today into the Christmas Island tragedy the Australia Greens have praised the efforts of rescuers and called for an independent review of search and rescue protocols.

“The efforts of both locals on Christmas Island and Australian service men and women were courageous and lifesaving, said Senator Hanson-Young.

“There is no doubt that these brave people risked their lives, however the coronial inquest did raise questions over the preparedness and protocols in place to respond to such a tragedy. This is the responsibility of government.

“This case is not about the efforts of individual officers who risked their lives dragging people from the sea, this is about the protocols that govern search and rescue efforts.

“The Greens have consistently made calls for an independent review of search and rescue protocols.

“We can’t comment directly on the pending court case, this is a matter for the courts to determine.

“However, the Australian government should establish an independent review of the protocols to assist our officers in responding to search and rescue operations in order to give them the best chance at saving lives and protecting their own safety.
