Maitland’s CCTV funding should be on need not political partisanship

The Member for Paterson, Bob Baldwin says that Maitland City Council should reapply for CCTV funding under the new Safer Streets Program.

There is a difficulty with that, Maitland is not eligible under the Coalition's re-badged program because only seats where the coalition made a promise may apply.

So what is the criteria - crime in the local area ? No. The ability of the Council to fund the project ? No

The criteria is that you must have been one of the Coalition promises made during the election campaign.

Maitland City Council have had money ripped away despite the fact that the grant was fully budgeted for and recommendation by the Attorney General's Department.

It seems the criteria for the Abbott Government's new program is that you must be an electorate which comes under the heading of "friends of the Abbott Government".

These things should be based on need not on political partisanship. Maitland's $186,340 should be restored.
