13 June 2014

The Minister for Veterans' Affairs today thanked Mr Shane Carmody for his service as Deputy President of the Repatriation Commission and Deputy Chair of the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission.

Mr Carmody's five year appointment expires on Saturday.

From Monday 16 June 2014, Mr Carmody will assume the new role of Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Secretary of the Department of Veterans' Affairs.

Mr Carmody's experience as a senior leader within the Department will assist the Government to deliver efficiencies to the Department of Veterans' Affairs business model and continue to streamline and improve services to veterans and their families.

“Shane Carmody is a dedicated and highly professional public servant. He has diligently discharged his duties on the Repatriation Commission and the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission for five years and I know he will continue his fine service in this newly-established role”, Senator Ronaldson said.

“Mr Carmody's new role will see him work alongside the Secretary, Mr Simon Lewis PSM, to drive the strategic reforms necessary to build a modern DVA for the future.”

“As Minister I am determined to ensure the Department responds to the evolving needs of our client base. We must not repeat the mistakes of the past.”

“The Government's commitment to a stand-alone Department of Veterans' Affairs means we must drive important reforms now in order to build a stronger Department to serve veterans and their families long into the future.”

Mr Carmody's replacement as the Deputy President of the Repatriation Commission and Deputy Chair of the Military Rehabilitation Compensation Commission will be announced in the near future.
