RUDD GOVERNMENT SET TO DELIVER $1.1 MILLION TO IMPROVE LOCAL ROAD SAFETY IN TAREE

The Rudd Government will invest more than $1.1 million to upgrade local roads in and around Taree through the Roads to Recovery program, Anthony Albanese, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, announced today during a visit to Taree.

Mr Albanese announced that this funding is being provided to Greater Taree City Council was expected to help make a number of local roads safer for motorists and their families. At this stage the safety upgrades to be funded include:

Ñ $150,000 to fully fund the replacement of the ageing 8-metre long timber bridge

along Cundle Flat Road with a concrete culvert;

Ñ $150,000 to fully fund the replacement of the 14-metre long timber bridge along

Wang Wauk Road with a concrete bridge;

Ñ $116,570 towards resealing a 3-kilometre section of Glenwarrin Road near

Elands and repair cracks, potholes and surface wear and tear (total project cost is around $134,800);

Ñ $75,000 contribution towards replacing the Comboyne Road timber bridge at

Killabakh Creek with a concrete culvert (total project cost is around $90,000);

Ñ $100,000 towards replacing the timber bridge along Mooral Creek Road with a

concrete bridge (total project is around $252,000); and

Ñ $150,550 towards replacing the 42-metre long timber Mummel River bridge

along Nowendoc Road with a concrete bridge (total project is expected to be $464,000).

We are committed to reducing crashes on Mid-North Coast roads and nationally.

That's why we are working in partnership with local councils, such as Greater Taree, to help deliver safer local roads and high quality local services.

These road projects are part of the $355 million in funding that the Rudd Government is delivering this year through the Roads to Recovery program across Australia.

The funding announced today complements our record funding of $2.45 billion to the Pacific Highway over the next five years. We are also currently providing $242.5 million for the Coopernook to Moorland section.

These projects, along with funding for the Pacific Highway, will help drive down the appalling social and economic cost of road carnage.
