Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese and Joel Fitzgibbon, Minister for Defence today announced the Rudd Labor Government would offer more than $2.1 million towards the extension to the Upper Hunter Regional Library in Muswellbrook.

The Government is funding more than half of this $3.28 million project.

The funding will be delivered from the $800 million Community Infrastructure Program - the single largest investment in local infrastructure in Australia's history.

“With the Commonwealth Infrastructure Program we are able to provide the money to councils for projects where funds haven’t been available before,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.

We are investing in major community and sporting infrastructure to support jobs and stimulate local economies during the global economic recession.

The project, which is being managed by the Muswellbrook Shire Council, will upgrade the existing library and replace the civic centre with a new regional library.

It is expected to include:

æ increased public space including a venue for travelling exhibitions; æ provide purpose built areas allowing for the storage of public archives and collections; æ community meeting rooms; æ information technology and interactive community areas; æ landscaping including new plantings and public art; and æ barrier access into the library, lift service, tactile signage and automatic doors.

This funding builds on $416,000 in funding that we have already allocated to Muswellbrook for smaller-scale community projects this year.

More than 3,000 community projects are being funded by the Rudd Labor Government across Australia, in partnership with local government, to support jobs, stimulate local economies and deliver long-term benefits for communities.
