15 October 2010 DAFF10/022L

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Joe Ludwig, has reappointed Keith Perrett for a second term as Chair to the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) board.

Mr Perrett is a grain farmer from Gunnedah in northern New South Wales who has extensive leadership experience with industry organisations and research bodies. He is also the Chair of the National Rural Advisory Council.

“Mr Perrett has served a three-year term as the GRDC Chair and is well qualified to continue to lead the corporation,” Minister Ludwig said.

“Mr Perrett has been active in the development of the National Grains RD&E Strategy. This is an important strategy that will secure the long-term delivery of grains research and development. The GRDC will play a key role in its implementation.”

As Chair Mr Perrett oversaw GRDC's wheat breeding strategy which has seen international investment in two of Australia's leading wheat breeding companies.

Mr Perrett was also recently announced as the inaugural recipient of the Australian Farm Industry Leader of the Year Award 2010.

The GRDC is an Australian Government statutory body that invests government and industry levy funds in research and development on behalf of the Australian grains industry.

“The GRDC has a strong record of achievement in research and development (R&D) in areas such as improved farming practices, varietal development and environmental performance that have led to productivity increases,” Minister Ludwig said.

“This has been critical in securing the competitiveness and profitability of Australia’s grains industries and will be just as important in addressing new challenges such as climate change.”

“As Chair Mr Perrett has played an integral part in the success of the GRDC’s R&D program.”
