$652 000 for Northern Territory Books in Homes project

Minister for Education, Julia Gillard today announced that the Australian Government will continue its support for the work of the Books in Homes Australia organisation within Northern Territory Indigenous communities.

The Australian Government will contribute $652 000 for the project’s work in designated Northern Territory schools into 2010.

To halve the gap in reading, writing and numeracy achievements for Indigenous children within a decade we must invest in initiatives that build the capacity of whole communities; parents, teachers and schools.

Books in Homes Australia is currently supporting Indigenous students and schools in communities which are part of the Northern Territory Emergency Response.

Currently, the organisation is assisting around 8300 Indigenous students across these communities. The project provides each child with nine books of their choosing to support their literacy development.

Participating schools are also provided with a number of books for their school library, ensuring children are able to access a diverse range of reading materials.

The Government firmly believes that all Australian students need to be proficient in the basics like literacy to be able to fully participate in the world of work and further study.

The Rudd Government has committed more than half a billion dollars to help schools that are struggling to teach the foundation subjects of literacy and numeracy.

In fact, literacy and numeracy pilot projects are already underway in schools across the Northern Territory to help us find the best ways of helping students who are struggling with the basics.

Together with the new National Curriculum currently under development, the Education Revolution is driving a renewed focus on the foundation skills of literacy and numeracy.

The Rudd Government is committed to closing the gap in educational outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
