PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE TO CONSIDER $40M NEW FACILITIES AT LONE PINE BARRACKS, SINGLETON

Minister for Defence the Hon. Joel Fitzgibbon MP, and the Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support, the Hon. Dr Mike Kelly AM MP, announced today that a $793.1 million construction proposal for new facilities and supporting infrastructure at Defence bases around Australia has been referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works. Around $40 million of the $793.1 million will be invested in new facilities and supporting infrastructure at Lone Pine Barracks, Singleton.

“The new facilities will address the needs of the Enhanced Land Force Stage 1 capabilities including the training of additional infantry soldiers at Lone Pine Barracks,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.

“The project will also provide facilities and infrastructure at Army bases in Townsville, Kapooka, Holsworthy, Puckapunyal and Perth. Facilities will also be provided at RAAF Bases Amberley, Edinburgh and Richmond for increased joint enabling elements resulting from the establishment of enhanced land force capabilities”.

“This project will provide new and refurbished accommodation and training facilities, as well as common use facilities and site infrastructure upgrades at Defence sites across five states. Facilities at Kapooka, Singleton, Holsworthy and Puckapunyal will provide modern accommodation and supporting infrastructure for increased Army training, whilst at RAAF bases Amberley, Edinburgh and Richmond, new facilities will be provided for joint enabling elements supporting the Enhanced Land Force capabilities,” Dr Kelly said.

Subject to Parliamentary approval, construction is planned to commence in mid 2009 and be completed in late 2010.
