ALAN GRIFFIN MP Shadow Minister for Consumer Health and Consumer Protection

8 April 2003

OPIUM ENERGY DRINK MUST BE BANNED

Today’s announcement of the availability for sale of an energy drink containing opium is an outrage.

The producers of ‘Naughty Boy’ energy drink are clearly trying to cash in on an alleged legal loophole under our Food Standards Code.

If this loophole exists, it must be closed.

If it does not, the full force of the law should be brought to bear on this company.

Having a food standard in place that allows manufacturers to claim that they can market hallucinogenic drugs in drinks targeted at young people is just not on.

The Health Minister must ensure the Food Standards Australia New Zealand acts immediately to ensure this matter is dealt with.
