The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Senator Sandy Macdonald, met with the Townsville delegation today and assured them that he would make a balanced decision in good faith in the interest of our community. “Senator Sandy Macdonald listened carefully to the advice from the delegation,” Member for Herbert, Peter Lindsay, said today. “He advised the delegation that defence was in the process of preparing a final report and it was expected to be delivered for his consideration by the end of this month,” Mr Lindsay said. “I am encouraged that Tony Mooney has pledged a significant cash contribution to help turn the site into a magnificent extension to The Strand. “I think we are well on our way to getting a great result that the community will be proud of,” he said. “The Minister has given the delegation assurance that if a small portion of the land is to be used for defence housing, then Defence Force housing will comply with the Townsville City Council’s town planning scheme. “The next stage of this process will be to decide how the transition to community ownership is managed, how the financial arrangements of the transition will be apportioned and what legal mechanism will be used to achieve this. “So far, I’ve achieved some very significant wins for the community, but there is still some way to go, and I will be working hard to get an even better result,” Mr Lindsay said.
