v-eJ —

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Gareth Evans, will visit New Zealand on ΙΟ Ι 1 February for talks with his New Zealand counterpart, Mr Don McKinnon.

The talks, to be held in Wellington, will be the tenth in the series of biannual meetings between Australian and New Zealand Foreign Ministers. The visit will also be the first by an Australian Minister since the general election in New Zealand last November.

Senator Evans said that these regular meetings reflected the close and strong working relationship between Australia and New Zealand in international affairs. The talks enabled both countries to exchange views and coordinate their

approaches on shared regional and international interests.

Senator Evans said the development of APEC following the successful Seattle meetings last November and preparations for the forthcoming South Pacific Forum meeting, to be hosted by Australia in Brisbane in August, were expected to be prominent subjects for discussion.

Current United Nations issues, including Bosnia and Somalia, would also be discussed particularly in the light of New Zealand's membership of the UN Security Council. Australia strongly «supported New Zealand's election to a two-year Security

Council membership in January 1993.
