QUEENSLAND DECISION WELCOMED FOR “OPT OUT” DONOR SYSTEM

The announcement today of a Queensland Parliamentary Select Committee to explore the “opt out” system of organ donation, is being welcomed by Senator Sue Boyce, Liberal Senator for Queensland.

“I congratulate Premier Anna Bligh on taking up this issue and encourage public discussion.

“I spoke about the “opt out” system back in February, in the lead up to organ donor week, and I appreciate that it takes time to get policy debated in the community and in government and look forward to seeing what the Select Committee recommend,” Senator Boyce said.

The “opt out” system of organ donation puts the onus on people to consciously make a decision about not being an organ donor. The system is being used successfully in countries like Spain and Austria.

“At present we have around 1800 people on the transplant waiting list, and of those, more than one person dies every week whilst waiting for a transplant - this is unacceptable in our country.

“I urge all interested parties to send in their submissions to the Select Committee so that we can actively pursue this cause. I also urge the Federal Government to take Queensland’s lead on this issue, and explore the option of the “opt out”

system,” Senator Boyce said.
