LABOR CONCERNED BY RISE IN UNEMPLOYMENT

Labor is concerned that unemployment has increased for the second month in a row, Shadow Employment Minister, Penny Wong said today.

Today's ABS Labour Force figures show the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate up to 5.2%.

"This second consecutive increase comes while Australian business and industry is crying out for skilled workers.

"It is a symbol of the Howard Government's incompetence that unemployment has increased while employers are desperate for skilled workers."

Senator Wong also expressed concern about teenage unemployment reaching 22.9%, the fifth consecutive monthly increase.

"While John Howard irresponsibly tells teenagers to leave school early, full-time teenage unemployment continues to blow out.

"The Howard Government should start investing in young Australians, instead of telling them to leave school early."
