UNITED STATES ACTION AGAINST IRAQ

"The military action taken by the United States against Iraq is completely understandable in the circumstance?, the Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Laurie Brereton, said in Sydney in response to the cruise missile attacks conducted by the US against targets in Iraq yesterday and today.

"Saddam Hussein's record of appalling atrocities against the Kurdish people is a matter of international notoriety and his latest actions in northern Iraq must be a matter of grave concern for the international community."

"The United States action appears on the information available to have been conducted in a manner designed to minimise civilian casualties. Every effort must be taken to ensure that innocent civilians do not pay the price for Saddam Hussein's actions."

"The United States action should also be seen in the context of Iraq's record of confrontation and repeated non-compliance with United Nations Security Council resolutions including those concerning the elimination of Iraq's nuclear, chemical and biological weapon capabilities. The continuing long-term threat of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction programs cannot be discounted."
