Address at Manly Women's Shelter, Manly, New South Wales August 22, 2013

E&OE……………………….……………………………………………………………

It’s great to be here at Manly Women’s Shelter to perform the last official act to formally handover to the Manly Women’s Shelter a cheque to represent the money raised by Pollie Pedal 2013 for the Manly Women’s Shelter, the local beneficiary of this year’s

ride. This is the second year that we have been able to raise money for the shelter and I am very pleased to be able to do this. Apart from anything else, Margie is a patron of this shelter, I would be in terrible trouble if I didn’t help a fine local institution which

Margie is so associated with now.

The shelter is a very important part of the Manly community because while this part of Sydney is often thought by those who don’t live here to be ‘up-market’ it doesn’t matter where you look there is human tragedy. Behind the nice fence, behind the secure door

of an up-market apartment block there can be an enormous amount of human tragedy and that is why we need organisations like the Manly Women’s Shelter to look after people when they are at their most vulnerable and it doesn’t matter where you are or who

you are. You just don’t know what is around the corner. We don’t know when mental illness might strike. We don’t know when family breakdown could hit. We don’t know when all of a sudden our world might collapse. It could happen to anyone, that’s why

we need support networks in place to catch us when we fall and that is one of the great things that the Manly Women’s Shelter has done.

Manly Women’s Shelter gets no regular funding from government. It gets some support from Manly Council and good on Council

for supporting. Mike Baird the state Member has certainly been active in private fundraising to support the shelter and I am very pleased that the Pollie Pedal has been able to support the shelter for the last two years.

It is great to have some of my Pollie Pedal mates. I think they deserve a round of applause. Thank you.

As you can see, don’t they all look young and fit? The amazing thing about these guys is just how far and how fast they can ride.

And of course some of them aren’t exactly young anymore but they are fierce riders, they are great patriots and they have been terrific friends and supporters to me. I want to particularly single out Kevin Nasser, Dick Miller and Matt Hayden, Pollie Pedal

legends who are here and have been supporting this bike ride now for about a decade.

So far, over the life of the Pollie Pedal all up more than $3 million has been raised for charity.

This year was the best ever, we raised over $750,000 for Carers Australia and now $140,000 for the Manly Women’s Shelter. I want to thank all of the sponsors for their incredible generosity. I want to thank everybody in the community who has cheered us

on our way. I want to thank the guys that I ride with who are such fabulous company on the road and who have been such very good friends to me over many, many years now.

Some of the people on Pollie Pedal I have known for 40 odd years. Some of them I have known for a shorter time but I have got

to say what a great bunch of friends you are and I don’t know what the future holds but I do know that friendship is incredibly important. Whatever job we have we need to be sustained by the people in our lives and we have all sorts of business

relationships, we have all sorts of relationships which flow from the job we do but in the end it is the relationships that we don’t have to have but we choose to have which are the ones that give us sustenance through life.

So, thank you very much fellas and one of you come and present the cheque to Ellie.
