MEDIA RELEASE

LABOR WELCOMES SATURDAY OPENING OF BALLOT FOR 2015 ANZAC DAY SERVICE AT GALLIPOLI

The Shadow Minister for the Centenary of Anzac Senator Don Farrell is encouraging Australians to enter the ballot to attend the Anzac Day Dawn Service on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915.

Senator Farrell said the ballot opens this Saturday the 16th of November at 12.01am.

“The great news is Australians have until January 31, 2014 to register for tickets and regardless of when they register, it will be the final draw which decides who attends,” he said.

“It is not a case of first in, first served which makes it very fair.

“A visit to Gallipoli on Anzac Day is always a moving occasion, but the 1915 commemoration to mark the Centenary of Anzac will be very historic and an experience never to forget.”

Senator Farrell said 8,000 out of the allocated 10,500 places would go to Australians. New Zealanders will be allocated 2,000 tickets and approximately 500 will go to official representatives of all countries that served in the Gallipoli campaign.

Senator Farrell said the Centenary of Anzac was above party politics.

“The Centenary of Anzac is truly a great opportunity to unite to honour the Anzac spirit and the sacrifice and bravery of those who have served over the past century,” he said.

Senator Farrell encouraged young Australians to enter the ballot: “It is wonderful that more and more young people are joining the annual pilgrimage to the birth place of the Anzac legend to better understand the event which defined us as a nation.”

He said more community organisations should contact their local MP for information on Anzac Centenary Local Grants available for Anzac Centenary projects.
